January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Human trafficking is an urgent problem across the globe and within the United States. Here are some key facts about the crime:
1. Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world.
The largest component of this crime is sex trafficking, but also includes labor trafficking and organ harvesting.
The former includes an estimated 25 million modern slaves.
2. Most victims are women and children.71% of all trafficking victims are women and girls.
In 2019, the United Nations reported a record number of girl victims.
3. The United States has an “underground sex economy.
“Traffickers in the United States gross an estimated $32 billion annually.
Over half of human trafficking victims are 17 or younger.
California, Texas, and New York have the highest human trafficking rates in the United States.
Human trafficking destroys many lives, opportunities, and futures. Child victims do not get a chance to experience stability in their childhood, which leaves psychological wounds. To increase stability in child victims’ lives, Global EP created 70 rescue packs for child trafficking victims in December 2018. These packs provided child victims necessities upon rescue. Global EP has partnered with other nonprofits in this ongoing project creating rescue packs. You can donate here to help provide stability to child victims’ lives.
